Summer is coming to an end. The light is changing and the days are becoming shorter. But while the massive crowds may have backed off a little, the blue bottles haven’t.

The clash of the local surf tribes in the Buckler to Bra surf contest and the surrounding mayhem make for an interesting day at the beach.

The chilling events that lead to the evening that changed Bondi forever. Was it the weather? Was it the fish? Or was just plain bad luck?

At 17, trainee lifeguard Trent Maxwell is the youngest on the team and at 59, Harry Nightingale is Bondi’s oldest lifeguard. Both are expected to participate in the lifeguard iron man race.

Becoming a lifeguard is a rite of passage for many a local Bondi kid. In recent years the Waverley Council Lifeguard service, which oversees Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama, has run a trainee program to develop young lifeguards.

Thieves are at large and anything unattended is always at risk. With conditions in the water mild, the lifesavers take the chance to scan the area and catch a perpetrator or two.
